Bird Netting

We manufacture and supply a wide range of high-quality bird netting to prevent birds from gaining access to buildings and other unwanted locations. Netting is considered the best approach for bird control as this is a physical barrier that once installed birds cannot access. The correct mesh size must be used; otherwise, failure can occur, and extreme cases injury to the bird.

We recommend the following mesh size: 75mm Gulls, 50mm Pigeons, 28mm Starlings & 19mm Sparrows.

Once purchased, netting should be installed using a wire rope frame system to keep the bird netting tight to prevent sag. A wireframe consists of 2mm 7×7 wire held between 2 corner fixing points, tensioned with a turnbuckle on one end and held together with ferrules or wire rope-grips.

A wireframe is held to a surface using corner and intermediate fixings. The corner fixing takes most of the net weight and the turnbuckle’s tension, so they need to be suitable for the task. Intermediate fixings also take a portion of the weight but are mainly for directing the wire rope and to keep tight to surface to prevent bowing. Fixings need to be spaced apart depending on the species controlled. For gulls & pigeons, this should be no more than 1m, starlings 0.5m and sparrows 0.3m.

The net is attached to the wireframe using either hogrings or cable ties. Hogrings are the recommended option as they are quick to install, unsightly; however, users must purchase a hogringer, which may be overkill for smaller tasks. Cable ties are fiddly, more visible but a cost-effective alternative.

Before undertaking any netting works the installers must understand the current legislation around control of pest birds and steps must be undertaken to prevent unnecessary harm. For bird netting, this would invoice the installer making sure that the works are carried outside of the breading season or when no birds are present at the time of installation.
